Les Paul: 1915-2009
Les Paul
Right now, there are a thousand music fans writing remembrances and obituaries for Lester William Polsfuss, better known as Les Paul. It's only fitting. He was one of the most remarkable people who ever lived. It cannot be overstated just how important to modern music he was. While it's true he didn't invent the electric guitar, he was one of it's earliest innovators. He designed the first successful solid-body electric guitar for Gibson Guitars, the guitar which shares his name, the "Les Paul." Read Lincoln's remembrance here.
Tetsuya Mizuguchi: A Guy Who Gets It
Games Plus Music Plus Babes Equals Awesome.
Until Mustafa finally meets his dream girl, currently defined as a combination of Nova from Star Blazers, Ninja from Go! Team, and Satomi Koorogi, he will more than likely be playing video games. Lots of video games.
Tragically, he's not terribly good at them, largely because he doesn't really have the free time to devote to it, but he enjoys them a great deal, especially the work of one Tetsuya
Mizuguchi. He will certainly be writing more on this topic, especially since Ninja's publicist won't return his phone calls and Ms. Koorogi has threatened the Japanese equivalent of a
restraining order, but here is something to tide us all over until that miraculous day finally arrives.
Peter Wheeler, 1944-2009
A Great Man Made a Great Car
Peter Wheeler died three days ago. If you're not a car guy, you probably don't know who Peter Wheeler was. He was a pretty impressive guy. He did something very rare: he made a big fistful of money by building British sports cars. Read more.
J. P. Patches, Mayor of the City Dump
Julius Pierpont Patches
For those who didn't grow up in the Seattle region, it's hard to explain just how awesome J. P. Patches was. He was the host of a children's show from 1958 to 1981, and continues to make appearances to this day. Julius Pierpont Patches was the mayor of the city dump, and showed cartoons while engaging in zany skits with the various visitors to his rundown shack: his girlfriend Gertrude; Boris S. Wort, the second meanest man in the world; Ketchikan the Animal Man; Gorst the friendly Ffrrppll; Miss Smith of Miss Smith's Delivery Service; and so many more. Think Krusty the Klown from The Simpsons minus the cynicism. Read more.
