Phil Baugh - Country Guitar
Country music has always produced some great musicians, and Phil Baugh was one of the best. He made his reputation by doing dead-on impersonations of the best-known country guitarists, from Chet Atkins to Les Paul to Luther Perkins. But most importantly, he had a style all his own. Watch the video below and see what we're talking about.
Geek DNA: Hyakugojyuuichi
We get asked a lot of questions about ourselves from time to time, questions such as "Where do you get your ideas?" and "How come you guys know all this stuff?" and "How did you get in here? This is supposed to be a secured area," among many others. Well, we get our ideas from the same place everyone else does (hint: think PDQ Bach). We know all this stuff because we've never bothered to forget it, and also because we've never bothered to learn anything useful, like a trade or actual job skills.
We feel that it is easier to just show you some of the things that have made us... well, us. (Looking for the easy way out is another Stax Bros. tradition.) So, a little section we like to call Geek DNA, in which we examine video clips that demonstrate, incontrovertibly and once and for all, that we have too much free time.
First up: Hyakugojyuuichi, a short Flash animation from a kid named Neil Cicierega. This thing is about ten years old, so right off, it occurs to us that he's not reallya kid any more. This is a little warped bit of fun featuring Pee-Wee Herman, Harry Potter, that one guy from the American version of Whose Line Is It Anyway? and a bunch of other stuff, all set to a Pokemon song. If none of that makes any sense to you, then congratulations. This was on Mustafa's computer pretty much constantly in 2000, which probably explains why he doesn't have that job any more.
At any rate, enjoy. Oh, here's the Wikipedia page.
The Incredible Truck Art of Pakistan
You've seen them. Pimped-out Japanese sport compacts covered in racing stickers, sporting the largest wing available and 20-inch wheels and an exhaust pipe the size of a coffee can. Forget it. They've got nothing on Pakistani truck art. Look at the gorgeously decorated trucks in the video below, and check out this article at weburbanist for a good overview of what it all means. In the meantime, Lincoln digs on the awesome Paki-pop in the video below.
Fantastic Plastic Louis Vuiton
Let's just go ahead and throw this up here.
Your Moment of Zen
The Bros will be going to Japan this Christmas, and Mustafa is reminded of his time living in Kyoto. Here's a small video from summer 2007, and with the semi (cicadas) chirping in the trees beside the Tetsugaku No Michi.
British New Wave Rockabilly
Crazy people playing crazy music, and a couple of guys in Devo suits maving like robots.
